Amherst College Acquires documentary, TORN FROM THE FLAG, for its Library by Klaudia Kovacs

Amherst College acquired the documentary, TORN FROM THE FLAG - A FILM BY KLAUDIA KOVACS, for its library. American political scientist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, William Taubman, stars in the Oscar-contender and eight-time award-winning film about the Cold War and the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

Taubman is a Bertrand Snell Professor of Political Science at Amherst College, and his biography of Nikita Khrushchev also won the National Book Critics Award for Biography in 2003.

Currently, for the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Freedom Fight of 1956, the so called “70 for 70 Program” aims to actively expand TORN FROM THE FLAG’s presence in American libraries and seeks to be added to another 70 libraries around the country. Klaudia Kovács recently taught a UCLA course: the class was about the Cold War and the 1956 Hungarian Revolution accompanied by the director’s Oscar contender and multi-award-winning film, TORN FROM THE FLAG. As the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Soviet Union and the 70th anniversary of Hungary’s freedom fight are approaching, there will be an international 70 for 70 series showcasing the documentary worldwide.

Multi-award-winning film director, Klaudia Kovács, was hired by UCLA Extension, Osher Institute to teach about her own film, TORN FROM THE FLAG as part of the Winter Course, 2025.

“In this course, film director, Klaudia Kovács, presents her Oscar contender and multi-award-winning, international documentary, Torn from the Flag (2007), about the decline of communism and the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The following notables appear in the documentary: Mikhail Gorbachev, Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger, and Otto von Habsburg. The movie was made in collaboration with Mark Kramer, the director of Harvard University’s Cold War Studies Project; William Taubman, Pulitzer Prize-winning Political Scientist and Khrushchev expert; Vilmos Zsigmond, Academy Award winning cinematographer; and Laszlo Kovacs, cinematography legend. After the screening, students take part in a discussion on the history and culture of Eastern Europe, the sociopolitical dynamics of the 20th century, and the filmmaking process itself.”
